A flash trip and a fridge!

Who knew a kitchen appliance could be the catalyst for a spontaneous 1,200-kilometre round trip? In the world of remote property renovation, sometimes the most pressing "emergencies" aren't structural—they’re logistical. We recently embarked on a high-speed "flash trip" to Brandvlei, driven by a single, icy-cold mission: the Great Fridge Upgrade of 2020.

For a long time, our trusty little bar fridge was the unsung hero of our Northern Cape base camp. It was a trooper, humming along in the corner and doing its best to keep the milk fresh and a few choice beverages cool. But as anyone who has spent time in the Karoo knows, "cool" is a relative term when the outside world is baking at 40°C. Brandvlei summers don't just lean on you; they hit with a physical weight, and as our projects grew in scale, our modest little fridge simply couldn't keep up with the demand.

The main objective of this trip was to swap out the old guard for a brand-new, full-sized unit. It might sound like a minor detail to someone living in the city with a supermarket on every corner, but out here, a reliable, high-capacity fridge is a genuine game-changer. When you’ve spent eight hours under a corrugated iron roof or trekking through the dust of a renovation site, the psychological value of a perfectly chilled drink cannot be overstated. We were tired of playing "fridge Tetris" just to fit a bottle of water next to the butter, and we were definitely done with lukewarm refreshments.

This new "bad boy" is more than just a place to store groceries; it’s an essential piece of infrastructure for our seasonal stays. With the intense heat that defines this region, having the ability to store a week's worth of fresh supplies and ice-cold drinks means we can stay on-site longer and work more efficiently. We no longer have to worry about the thermal limits of a small compressor struggling against the ambient room temperature.

The trip itself was a whirlwind—a focused delivery run that saw us navigating the long roads with the new unit strapped securely in the back, followed by the satisfying "click" of it being levelled and plugged in at the house. Watching that first tray of ice cubes freeze was a small but significant victory. It’s these incremental upgrades to our comfort that make the larger, more gruelling tasks of the Rusticana restoration possible. Now, no matter how hard the sun beats down on the Karoo, we know we have a cold sanctuary waiting for us inside.
