Securing Rusticana with a state-of-the-art CCTV security system.

Protecting our premises at Rusticana is paramount, and it is a task we take with utmost seriousness. It's a responsibility that feels particularly poignant, given that the initiative to install a hi-tech CCTV security system was a vision shared by my late father, who passed away in 2024. This project isn't just about security; it's about honouring his foresight and creating a legacy of safety and peace of mind for everyone who calls Rusticana home, or works within its walls.

We are implementing a comprehensive plan to deploy a sophisticated, integrated security system, one designed for maximum effectiveness, resilience, and remote accessibility. The system is in the pipeline and will only be implemented when all equipment and planning have been completed.

The core of the system is a 16-base channel CCTV network. This will be comprised of 16 high-definition colour cameras, crucial for capturing detailed footage during daylight hours. Crucially, these same cameras are equipped with infrared night vision capabilities, ensuring continuous, clear surveillance regardless of lighting conditions. This 24/7 monitoring capability is fundamental to effective security, as it leaves no window of opportunity for unauthorised activity.

Supplementing this static camera network will be two advanced IP moving head cameras. These Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras offer unparalleled flexibility. Operators, either on-site or remotely, will be able to control the camera's movement – panning across a wide area, tilting up and down, and zooming in on specific points of interest. This active surveillance capability is essential for tracking movement, investigating incidents, and providing a dynamic layer of security that static cameras cannot achieve.

A security system is only as reliable as its infrastructure. Recognising this, we are investing significantly in the back-end systems that support the cameras. The installation involves laying 600 meters of high-grade signal and power cabling. This extensive network ensures that high-quality video signals are transmitted efficiently and reliably from every camera location to the central recording and control unit.

Powering this network are two 16-channel power distribution units (PDUs). These dedicated power supplies are designed to provide consistent, reliable electricity to each of the 18 cameras and the recording equipment, minimising the risk of individual component failure due to power issues.

Furthermore, we are addressing the critical issue of power stability. The modern security system will have an integrated lithium-ion battery backup. This is a crucial addition in any location susceptible to power outages. Lithium-ion technology offers high energy density and longevity, ensuring the entire security system remains operational for an extended period, even during prolonged grid failures. This feature guarantees that Rusticana remains monitored and secure at all times, preventing vulnerabilities during electrical disruptions.

To ensure seamless integration with the existing architecture and optimal performance, we have partnered with Elgato Artworks for the design and fabrication of essential hardware components.

Elgato Artworks is currently finalising the design of a custom installation panel enclosure. This centralised cabinet will house the core components of the system – the recording unit, power distribution units, battery backup system, and networking gear – ensuring they are organised, protected from the elements, and tamper-resistant. This professional enclosure is vital for maintainability and physical security.

Furthermore, Elgato Artworks is designing specialised wall bracket mounts for all cameras, ensuring optimal positioning for maximum coverage. These brackets are not off-the-shelf solutions; they are tailored to the specific mounting points on both the main building and various outbuildings at Rusticana. Critically, these brackets are being fitted with sun, rain, and sandstorm protection hoods. Given the potential environmental challenges, this proactive measure is essential for protecting the cameras from the elements, ensuring their longevity and maintaining clear visibility even in harsh conditions.

One of the most powerful features of this new system is its ability to be remotely accessed from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. Authorised personnel will be able to view live camera feeds, review recorded footage, and even control the PTZ cameras from their smartphones, tablets, or computers. This remote capability is a game-changer for several reasons:

Real-time Monitoring: We can check in on Rusticana at any time, instantly confirming its security status and responding to any alerts.

Incident Investigation: Should an event occur, footage can be reviewed remotely to identify the cause, determine the sequence of events, and provide valuable evidence.

Operational Oversight: For property managers, this provides a tool to ensure operational safety and security protocols are being followed.

Peace of Mind: For me, personally, this remote access provides incredible peace of mind, knowing that I can always check on Rusticana, a place that holds such deep personal meaning.

This project, inspired by my father, is a testament to our commitment to the safety and security of Rusticana. We are not just installing a system; we are implementing a comprehensive security solution that is resilient, proactive, and designed for the modern world. By combining advanced camera technology, robust infrastructure, integrated battery backup, custom protective hardware, and remote accessibility, we are creating an environment where peace of mind and safety are paramount. It’s a vision realised, and one that will provide enduring protection for Rusticana for years to come.
