As we begin packing our work gear and mapping out our logistics for an upcoming working getaway in December at Rusticana in Brandvlei, there is an unmistakable mix of quiet determination and cautious optimism in the air. Two previous attempts at this journey were derailed by unforeseen circumstances, and if there is one lesson those delays taught us, it is that anxiety can easily play mind games with even the most seasoned planner. Heading into the expansive, quiet reaches of the Northern Cape, our primary goal this time is to avoid unnecessary stress, keeping our expectations grounded while remaining realistic about what two sets of hands can truly accomplish.
A working vacation is always a delicate balancing act, a dance between active labour and essential rest. Our master task list for Rusticana is ambitious, requiring strategy, endurance, and practical expertise. High on the priority agenda is structural work: we need to cast the concrete slab for the conservancy septic tank system, a crucial milestone in securing proper sanitation infrastructure for the property. Alongside this major masonry task, we are scheduled to lay and connect a new main water supply line directly into the outbuilding, ensuring reliable pressure and long-term utility access. The building’s envelope also demands immediate attention, as we plan to systematically fill structural wall cracks and apply a fresh coat of protective exterior paint to guard against the elements.
Between these primary installations, we have factored in smaller, high-impact maintenance tasks. There are minor leaks along the main supply water pipeline leading to the main house that require prompt plumbing repairs to prevent wasted resources in an arid environment. Inside, a significant physical task awaits: relocating the massive, heavy cast-iron coal stove out of the kitchen and into an adjacent room. Clearing this centrepiece serves a dual purpose—it opens up the interior architecture, allowing us to conceptualise a modernised kitchen layout, while simultaneously giving us dedicated space to begin carefully restoring the vintage coal stove to its former glory.
Yet, beyond the cement mixing, pipe fitting, and structural work, this trip remains a festive season retreat. The rugged beauty of Brandvlei offers a rare solitude that invites deep relaxation, provided one works with the environment rather than against it. We are well aware that the Northern Cape summer will bring its signature heat, with temperatures regularly soaring well past 36 degrees Celsius. Operating without air conditioning in such a climate demands respect for the elements; it means starting labour at the break of dawn, pacing our physical exertion, and embracing the slow, restful rhythm of the late afternoon shade. Heat is simply part of the landscape’s character, and we are thoroughly prepared for it.
Ultimately, Rusticana is about building something enduring. As long as we approach each project with patience and steady hands, this trip promises to be both a productive endeavour and a deeply rewarding summer escape.
