Kitting Out the House: Alarm system adventures!

What a whirlwind trip that was! We just got back from another dash to the house, and this time, our mission was all about getting a GSM alarm system up and running. This isn't just any alarm; it's a smart one that pings us with notifications showing exactly which zones have been triggered and where in the house. Super helpful for when we need to relay info to the police and our awesome neighbour.

Before we even left, we snagged a budget-friendly but totally functional GSM alarm system. The kind that shoots alerts straight to our phones via SMS – pretty neat, right? The first step was getting a SIM card, getting it RICA registered (that's a whole other story in itself!), and then giving it a proper test run. You wouldn't believe the relief when that worked flawlessly!

We also wanted to make sure this system was battery-powered for those inevitable power outages. So, we grabbed a 12V battery power supply and extended the cables for the passive sensors. This way, the whole setup runs off mains power normally but seamlessly switches to battery if the lights go out. No more worrying about security gaps during a blackout!

Once we arrived, my son, bless his adventurous spirit, practically *climbed* into the roof. He was a cabling machine, running wires to every room – the passage, kitchen, sun-room, and even out to the outbuilding, wiring up two rooms there too. Meanwhile, I got the main alarm unit installed in the kitchen of the main house. It's super convenient because we can activate it either via SMS or with a wireless remote control.

After all that hard work, the moment of truth arrived: testing everything. And guess what? It all worked perfectly! You can imagine the wave of relief that washed over us. Knowing we've added this extra layer of protection to the house is a huge comfort.

To top it all off, I looped in our neighbour and the police services. They now have us in their register, fully aware that there's an active alarm system with multiple sensors covering both the main house and the outbuilding. It feels good to know everyone's on the same page!
