A quick recharge and a house check-up.
There are times when the journey to the Northern Cape isn't about the heavy lifting of construction, but about the essential rhythm of maintenance and the celebration of family milestones. Our most recent escape to Brandvlei provided the perfect opportunity to step away from the daily grind, recharge our batteries, and conduct a comprehensive "state of the union" inspection of the homestead.
This trip felt a bit different logistically. Since we weren't hauling a ton of building sand or a new hot-water cylinder, we decided to leave my trusty Toyota Camry in the garage and opted for my wife’s Toyota Corolla instead. The lighter footprint made the six-hour drive feel effortless, though we certainly felt the absence of my father, our usual "on-site foreman." While he couldn't join us this time, his influence was everywhere as we walked the grounds with our clipboards, checking the integrity of the work we’ve completed over the years.
A major focus of this visit was a full house inspection. In the Karoo, the environment is a silent but persistent force; the extreme temperature fluctuations between midday heat and midnight chills can test even the most solid masonry and plumbing. We meticulously checked the seals on the windows, the state of the exterior paint we applied in previous seasons, and ensured the electrical systems in the "Base-camp" were still humming along perfectly. We were relieved to find that everything was in excellent order, a testament to the sweat equity we've invested since 2007.
The highlight of the trip, however, was celebrating our son’s 17th birthday. It has become a wonderful tradition that his birthday frequently aligns with the school holidays and our Brandvlei expeditions—a genuine win-win for the whole family. Having been part of this town’s community since he was five years old, he now moves through Brandvlei with the confidence of a local. Watching him celebrate another year of his life in the shadow of this house, a place he has helped dream into reality, was incredibly rewarding.
Between birthday festivities, we used the downtime to walk through the main house and assess the next phase of our master plan. We spent hours discussing the priority of upcoming projects—from final flooring choices to the long-awaited upgrades for the main distribution board. These moments of quiet assessment are where the vision for "Rusticana" truly sharpens. We returned home not just rested, but with a clear roadmap for the months ahead.
