The transition from a dusty storage shell to a fully realised "Base-camp" reached its emotional crescendo in March 2008. After months of long hauls, blistering Karoo heat, and the meticulous troubleshooting of ageing infrastructure, we are thrilled to announce a major milestone: Phase One of the Brandvlei project is officially 100% complete. The granny flat has been transformed from a neglected outbuilding into a polished, self-sufficient sanctuary.

Our final push took place between March 20th and 25th, a six-day marathon dedicated to the "finer details" that turn a construction site into a home. The focus was on security and functionality. We successfully hung and sealed new front and back entrance doors, providing not just a physical upgrade but a sense of completion and safety for the structure. Inside, the electrical grid—once a source of anxiety—is now fully operational. We finalised all electrical outlets throughout the space and installed the first of our planned light fittings. Flicking a switch and seeing the interior bathed in warm light felt like the house was finally waking up.

Plumbing, our old nemesis, was also brought to heel. We serviced and reset the toilet system and wash basin, ensuring every seal was airtight and every flush reliable. By realigning the waste pipes and securing the water supply lines, we have finally moved past the era of "temporary fixes" into a phase of dependable, long-term operation.

This transformation represents more than just a renovation; it is the establishment of our tactical headquarters. Having a cosy, functional base camp changes the entire dynamic of the project. We no longer have to "rough it" while we work; we have a place to recharge, cook, and plan. With the granny flat now standing as a testament to what is possible with grit and family support, we are officially shifting our focus to the next great challenge: breathing new life into the main homestead of Rusticana.
